About the institute

168 years isn’t too short a time span in human history—certainly not when it comes to shaping generations through knowledge and innovation. Established in 1856 as the Bengal Engineering College, the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology Shibpur (IIEST Shibpur) stands as one of the oldest engineering institutions in India, carrying a proud colonial legacy and a tradition of academic leadership. Over the decades, it has played a pioneering role in defining the course of engineering education and research—not just in Eastern India, but globally. Now recognized as an Institute of National Importance under the NITSER Act, IIEST Shibpur is nestled along the banks of the Hooghly River in Howrah, adjacent to Kolkata—India’s third-largest city and the nerve center of the East. With a legacy of excellence and a forward-looking vision, the institute continues to inspire progress across disciplines.
